The Crime Observatory (Observatorio de la Delincuencia, ODA) is an initiative launched by the  Institute of Criminology of Malaga (Spain . This centre was created in order to study the evolution of crime in the Spanish region of Andalusia. These are its main objectives:

1.- To be a source of information based on official data about criminality.
2.-To carry out empirical studies on different aspects of the criminal phenomenon.
3.- To become a specialised documentation centre.

Nevertheless, the Observatory’s primary objective is to present verified and reliable information on criminality. Nowadays, it is mass media who provides citizens with criminal information. Such media, whose purposes go beyond information itself, usually present an inaccurate image of reality, creating social alarm and fear. This Observatory intends to report on the quantity and evolution of crime, based mainly on official data, adding to it the expertise needed for its correct interpretation. The result of this work will be an annual report that offers a serious and thorough analysis on criminal activity.
